When the wrecking ball GFC hit, to save a few pennies I decided to save on the office rent and start working from home. I have been working from home for nearly 5 years now.
While I am the first to admit it has its advantages, like ducking out for an uncrowded lunchtime surf and always having a clean kitchen, for me it really has come at a cost financially, emotionally and spiritually.
Luckily, when I landed the gig as CEO of Shortspace we immediately had issues that made working from my home unrealistic. Growing staff numbers was just part of the issue. We needed a space to accommodate everybody comfortably, the garage, the dining room and even my son’s bedroom just didn’t cut it anymore.
On the suggestion of a mate, who had some under-utilised space for a short time in the City and needed some extra cash, we decided to take the punt and move the Shortspace team back into town. Gee I wish I had done it earlier.
Immediately the morale has changed, people started to dress up for work, which made them feel good about themselves and have a higher self-esteem, they were anxious to organise meetings so our prospects and clients could visit our offices and us theirs. There was a certain buzz that we never got at home, which meant more work was getting done. People were starting to get to work early, after work drinks were being organised. The phone was now running off the hook due to a new focused work orientation, instead of being surrounded by domesticity.
Shortspace is the perfect avenue to get you out of working from home and being more productive. Look down at the lists and find a premises that meets your budget, if you don’t like it after a day, find something else and move on to another premises or district. Setting up a Wi-Fi connection only takes a minute. Like me I bet you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much more work you get done and how you and your staff’s morale has lifted.
